Window cleaning
Window cleaning: height and power line rules
Before I book window cleaning on an upper floor, I check two things: how high the cleaner will work, and whether a power line runs near the glass.
When the state rules apply
Washington's window-cleaning safety rules cover window cleaning inside or outside a building once the cleaner works from a level more than 48 inches above grade. (WAC 296-878-100, read Oct 19, 2026)
So a cleaner on a ladder, a roof or an upper floor more than 48 inches above the ground is working under these rules. (WAC 296-878-100, read Oct 19, 2026)
Distance from power lines
- Most lines: 10 feet. (WAC 296-878-17005, read Oct 19, 2026)
- Insulated lines under 300 volts: 3 feet. (WAC 296-878-17005, read Oct 19, 2026)
To work closer, the job starts only after the utility or line operator has de-energized or moved the lines, or put protective coverings on them. (WAC 296-878-17005, read Oct 19, 2026)
What I ask before the job
- Will anyone work more than 48 inches above the ground?
- Does a power line run near any window on the list?
- If it does, who contacts the utility, and when?
